The Catholic Diocese of Christchurch has appointed Andy Doherty as General Manager.
Answerable to the Bishop, his areas of responsibility cover the rebuild of Diocesan properties following the earthquakes including the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, finance, education, pastoral services and the Catholic Development Fund.
Bishop Barry Jones said that Doherty impressed the selection committee with his breadth and depth of experience in a range of businesses and sectors.
“He has a background in property and asset management including insurance as well as finance, governance and human resources.”
“With the rebuild of the Cathedral and repairs to other Diocesan schools and buildings, along with the ongoing day-to-day running of the Diocese, the next 10 years will be both exciting and challenging,” the Bishop said.
Doherty, a graduate of Canterbury University, was Chief Executive of Pacific Wide (NZ) Ltd and previous to that Group Chief Executive Officer of Southern Hospitality Ltd.
“My skills and experience are well suited to this role. Having been educated at Xavier College and then Catholic Cathedral College, on the grounds of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, makes this appointment special to me. My mother was a regular attender of weekday Mass here, I was married here and my children baptised here. It’s a bit like coming home”.
“And I have always had a strong desire to be involved in the community which is an important part of this role,” he said.
He takes up his position on November 16.
