On October 17th 2021 Pope Francis celebrated the opening of the Synod: “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation, and mission”. Pope Francis began a process of inviting the church to listen and reflect on how we are journeying together as a Church.
The Diocesan Synthesis document culminates nine months of praying, listening, reflecting, sharing and providing feedback for this synod process.
There have been over 600 submissions from individuals and groups and we acknowledge the significant efforts people have made in taking the time to reflect on their journey of faith.
The synthesis has endeavoured to capture the sentiments of all this material.
The next phase is that our own synthesis has been sent to the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference with the other five dioceses of Aotearoa. A national hui is being held in early July for a representative group from across New Zealand to develop a national synthesis. This will then go to a Continental phase in early 2023.

“…the purpose of this Synod is not to produce more documents. Rather, it is intended to inspire people to dream about the Church we are called to be, to make people’s hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts, and restore strength to our hands for our common mission”
