We are delighted to announce that Father Michael Mahoney SM will be the guest speaker at our first Catholic Business Network luncheon event for 2023.
Although he’s spent 30 years in the back blocks of Brazil, many years as a science teacher at St Bede’s College and now utilises his industrious skills in South Westland, Fr Michael is taking us on a fascinating journey centred around his breathtaking escapades up and around Mt Everest.
Fr Michael is one of only three life members of the Mountain Guides Association of New Zealand and led the first expedition to attempt to climb Mt Everest with no oxygen and no sherpas. Their one concession to ‘doing it the traditional way’ was to increase their team from six to eight members once they learned there was a one-in-six chance someone would die on any given attempt to climb Mount Everest.
Without giving too much away, it will be a tale of kiwi ‘can-do’ ingenuity, discipline, teamwork, faith, goal setting and dealing with the ‘what-ifs’ that such an undertaking can throw at you at any given moment.
