Bishop Barry has passed away

It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the Christchurch Diocesan Family and to the wider community that our dear Bishop Barry passed away peacefully at 3.30am this morning (Saturday 13th February 2016).  Bishop Barry was 74 years of age.
Bishop Barry was readmitted to Christchurch Hospital on Friday 29th January after suffering a heart attack.  Prior to this he has had some months of ill health due to several strokes.  He had always hoped, along with all of us, that he would make a good recovery but that was not meant to be.
Bishop Barry was the 9th Bishop of Christchurch and has served as the Bishop of the Diocese since 2007.  He has provided sterling leadership of the Diocese particularly in the exceptional circumstances following the earthquakes.
In these last few months Bishop Barry has displayed his graciousness, patience, and gratitude to those who helped care for him.
The details of Bishop Barry’s funeral arrangements will follow soon.
On behalf of the Diocese I extend our sympathy to Bishop Barry’s loving family and all those who will miss him dearly.
Haere atu e te Rangatira o te Hahi, i roto i te korowai o te Atua.
Moe mai e Pa, moe mai.

May he rest in peace

Fr Rick Loughnan
